Довольно часто в тестовых средах приходится использовать временную лицензию VMWare ESXi, которая позволяет использовать гипервизор в течении 60 дней. Если к тому моменту, как этот срок подошел к концу, а вы все не закончили работы со своим стендом, и чтобы продолжить работу с этой средой, придется активировать хост ESXi валидным ключом. Однако, есть небольшой трюк, позволяющий сбросить обратный отсчет дней, оставшихся до окончания пробной лицензии.

Важно. Этот способ сброса счетчика лицензии можно использовать только в тестовых/лабораторных средах. Данный способ работает только для отдельно стоящего ESXi сервера. В том случае, если ESXi подключен к vCenter Server, этот трюк не сработает.
Чтобы сбросить лицензию, нужно включить SSH на хосте ESXi и подключится к нему.
Выполните следующие команды:
Удалить файл vmware.lic
Удалить файл license.cfg
Убедитесь, что в каталоге /etc/vmware/ отсутствуют файлы vmware.lic и license.cfg.
Откройте vSphere Client и убедитесь, что счетчик лицензий сброшен на 60 дней.

Даже если вы считаете, что продукт бесплатный, ему всё равно требуется лицензия. Если её нет, он устанавливается с 60-дневным пробным периодом, который заканчивается… через 60 дней.
В сравнении с другими гипервизорами, бесплатная версия VMware несколько ограничена, поскольку в ней нет vMotion, функции высокой доступности, устойчивости к отказам и так далее. Также хосты, управляющие бесплатным гипервизором VMware нельзя настраивать через центральный сервер управления – сервер vCenter. Их можно настраивать только через бесплатный клиент vSphere, ссылка на который есть на загрузочной странице наряду со ссылками на другие инструменты.
Но, как я уже сказал, у вас будет пробный период на 60 дней, во время которого можно поиграть со всеми функциями (если у вас, по крайней мере, 2 хоста). В этой статье я коротко расскажу, как активировать бесплатную версию гипервизора VMware.
Когда вы загружаете гипервизор VMware, начинается 60-дневный пробный период полной (неурезанной) версии, во время которого вы должны ввести регистрационный номер.
Как установить бесплатную лицензию VMware на VMware ESXi 6.5?
1. Загрузите гипервизор VMware с этой страницы (вам нужно будет создать аккаунт, если у вас его нет – это бесплатно).
Не забудьте заполнить все необходимые поля – отметьте, что вы согласны с условиями лицензии и на той же самой странице укажите, сколько хостов в вашей рабочей среде. Можно вписать до 999…
После того, как вы кликните на кнопку подтверждения, проверьте свой почтовый ящик, чтобы активировать свой аккаунт VMware (называющийся My VMware) до того, как попытаетесь зайти.
И только после этого вы сможете зайти в свой новосозданный аккаунт VMware. Когда вы зайдёте, то увидите страницу, на которой сможете:
2. Установите бесплатный гипервизор на своё железо, а клиент vSphere – на рабочую станцию. Вы можете прожечь ISO файл на CD-диск или использовать систему удалённого управления вроде iLo, чтобы напрямую смонтировать ISO образ.
Для клиента vSphere нужна ОС Windows. Можно использовать ноутбук или обычный компьютер, работающий под Windows XP SP3, Vista, 7, Windows 8.x. Обращаем внимание, что начиная с версии 6.5 клиент vSphere не выпускается. Для прописать лицензию через веб-интерфейс для VMware 6.5 и выше написано в 3b (чуть ниже).
3a. Прописываем лицензию через клиента
Соединитесь с хостом ESXi > вкладка Configuration > Licensed features
Замечание: в ESXi 5.x это также, как в ESXi 6.0 или 6.5.
3b. Прописываем лицензию через веб-интерфейс
Введите ключ и нажимате Check license
После успешной проверки нажмите Assign license
Вот и всё.
Теперь вы должны видеть текущие параметры лицензии вроде этих:
Раньше было ещё ограничение на физическую оперативную память, но теперь его сняли… неограниченная ОП.

i have downloaded the esxi5.0. The license shows that it will be valid for 60 days. My question is once this key expires; will the VMs that i created stop running? I am not an enterprise user.

I assume ESXi will fall back to the free funtionality. That means you’ll loose all functions which are not part of the free ESXi license.

This free license has some limitations, like you can only use 32GB vRAM (with ESXi 5, version 4 has other limits).

It turn out that the free version is only for virtualizing the host & can be use on a physical host with max. 32 Gig of memory. Here is what the support team responded with as quote:
«ESXi is the base product (software) using which you virtualize the host. The software that you had download is called vSphere 4.0 Enterprise Plus and vSphere 5.0 Enterprise Plus which needs a purchased license to use it and comes with 60 days trail which includes ESXi added with features to manage the Virtual Machine between the hosts and the hosts can be centrally managed. As you wanted a free license that never expires I suggested you the free ESXi Hypervisor which enables you to use the virtual the hosts and the hosts with this product are standalone which can not be managed centrally.»
So, i took the free key and applied in on my lab host.

Maybe there is a misunderstanding:
I had an installer for ESXi 6.0, but it didnt recognize the network adapter. I download the installer for ESXi 6.5 and installed it host A, also one year ago. This host A is still up and running very well.
I used the same USB stick to install on host B in Dec. 2017. This host I gave to friends for testing reasons of the provided VM’s.
No I am wondering about the error message in my first post on this host B. As said, host A is still fine.
There is written: «Not applicable» what mean to me I don’t need a licence.

You’re right, there are a lot of names for products, suites, etc.
VMware named the free ESXi edition «Hypervisor» (which might have been a marketing thing), but all editions use the same code/binaries, and only the license key makes the difference. The OS aka «VMkernel» is actually a proprietary product, which however makes use of Linux drivers etc.

The Windows client may still work with the version/build you are currently using, but it’s EOL, and not supported anymore for ESXi 6.5 Update 1 and later. To manage ESXi hosts, VMware embedded a HTML5 clinet in the code URL: https:// /ui/
In order to use advanced features, and manage multiple hosts, VMware offers vCenter Server. However, it’s not a free product, and the hosts need to have a paid license too.
«vSphere» is the name of the suite, i.e. not of an individual product.
Back to your issue. Once you install an ESXi host, it can be used for 60 days for evaluation. To use the host after this period, it’s required to assign a license key (free license, or paid license). The license keys for the free «Hypervisor» edition do not show up in My VMware. You can get the key from the links I posted in my first reply.
I guess that you’ve assigned a license key to Host A at some point in time, which is why it’s still active!?
VMWare evaluation license has expired
I am running 2 VM hosts. Both are ESXi 5.1.0. One has been running several months and I got it’s license. The other has only been running for about 64 days. I have been off with a medical issue for a couple of weeks. I came back yesterday and was greeted with this issue. Anyone know what my options are? Thanks.
ESXi free has a limit of 32GB of physical RAM. You will need to either remove the RAM or upgrade to a different license.

Get a full license?
VMware was helpful enough to extend a trial for me while I was waiting for my purchase to come through, but it was kind of a unique situation.
Should both be licensed?
If you overlooked applying the license to the host, in the management client, select the host, click the configuration tab, select Licensed Features, click edit, and add the license.
Mine shows something like this:
Product: VMware vSphere 5 Hypervisor Licensed for 1 physical CPUs (unlimited cores per CPU)
License Key: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Expires: Never
Product Features:
Up to 32 GB of memory
Up to 8-way virtual SMP
You must not have entered the license on that host. What license are you running? If t’s free you should have gotten the license when you downloaded it.
Mine says «evaluation expired». I found the license but when I try to enter it I get an error about my host having more than 32 GB of RAM. It appears this is a «bug» but the fix looks pretty geeky.
